On 30th September, a busload of our wonderful recycled teenagers set off from Headford for the Lough Rea Hotel, ready for a fun-filled and action-packed day as part of Positive Ageing Week!
The group joined older people from Tuam, Ballygar, Loughrea and Gort for a fantastic day of connection, information, laughter and activities. It was a wonderful opportunity to meet new people, catch up with familiar faces and celebrate the importance of staying active, connected and involved in our communities as we grow older.
Throughout the day, a range of agencies were on hand to provide valuable information about the services and supports available to older people. This gave everyone the opportunity to learn more about what is available locally and how these services can help support independent living, wellbeing and quality of life.
There was certainly no shortage of fun either! The group enjoyed an exciting range of activities, including drumming, exercise with Paul Gillen from the HSE, laughter yoga and a few games of cards. From keeping active and trying something new to sharing a laugh and enjoying one another’s company, there was something for everyone.
A highlight of the day was a delicious, full sit-down lunch, giving everyone a chance to relax, enjoy good food and catch up with friends. The celebrations continued afterwards with a lively social dance to the wonderful music of Break Free, getting everyone in the spirit and onto the dance floor!
There was also a very special celebration on the day, as Mary Murphy from Headford was presented with a birthday cake in honour of her 100th birthday. This was a lovely moment and a wonderful opportunity to celebrate Mary’s incredible milestone alongside friends and fellow community members. Congratulations to Mary on reaching this very special age!
The day was a wonderful reminder that positive ageing is all about staying connected, embracing new experiences, looking after our wellbeing and, most importantly, having fun along the way.
A big thank you to everyone who organised the event, the agencies who shared their knowledge and information, Paul Gillen from the HSE, the band Break Free, and all those who took part and helped make the day such a success.
Our Headford group returned home with plenty of smiles, great memories and, no doubt, a few stories to share!
